A mobile app concept designed to enhance the Disney Passholder experience through personalized perks, seamless feature access, and exclusive content.
Leaning into my own experience as an Annual Passholder, and implementing based on feedback I have heard from others, my goal was to create something genuinely helpful.
And most importantly, I built with flexibility in mind. By allowing users to move sections and opt-in to features, they are picking their adventure.
Adaptable layouts and flows are important to users, especially when aiming to create something that looks and feels exclusive. That's why every element was designed with that in mind! (You can learn more below!)
I am not a Disney employee and claim no rights to Disney property. This is for portfolio purposes only.
This is a personal project for a Disney app specifically designed for Annual Passholders to track their pass, as well as a range of other useful features centered on enhancing their Magical Experience.
As an Annual Passholder myself, I have encountered a few instances with the My Disney app that left me wanting more, or searching through the app to find features relevant to my needs and visits.
Having the ability to track pass usage, easier access to discounts, and a better way to view blackout dates are a few examples of app improvements that would organize the overall experience.
After considering the various options for improving or adding to the My Disney app, I concluded that there were enough features and benefits for a unique app to enhance the 'magical experience' of being Passholders.
Utilizing flowcharts, wireframes, and tools like Figma I outlined the main features, organized them into sequences of customizable sections & pages, and visually designed the initial UI layouts.
There were a few app features that I decided to include due to their importance to the user experience, like making the sections in the layout customizable. By simply adding a three-line icon to the corner of each section, users are able to move sections up and down depending on their priorities. This allows them to control the flow of the app, increasing the chances of them using it, and for longer periods.
Another feature designed with the user's experience in mind was to include a fixed drop-down at the top of the app for them to quickly access the barcode and proof of their pass ownership, making it easier to access their discounts. Especially when trying to make a purchase in parks or on Disney property, it can be inconvenient and frustrating to get through the click path to show the cast member in the rush of the environment.
Further intention was put into the styling and decoration of the app. Passholders appreciate feeling like they are receiving or experiencing something that offers them that extra bit of magic. So, a touch of golden filigree was added as an accent with a unique color scheme designed for the app that blended gold, 'Mickey Magic' blue, and a royal purple into a theme. I also incorporated movement in the background to keep the edges of the app engaging and to better frame the white background of the sections themselves.
The top priority is to build around features that would be frequently used by Annual Passholders, make them easier to find and use, as well as offer new and exclusive features catered to their needs as frequent visitors.
The main, or automatic features include:
A browser-based web game that seamlessly merges the thrill of dice-based randomness with the rich narrative world of written roleplay.
An immersive and captivating experience where chance and storytelling come together, creating a dynamic and engaging gaming environment.
At the heart of the Universe Game is the use of dice mechanics, injecting an element of unpredictability into the role-playing journey.
Whether a seasoned storyteller or a newcomer to the world of written roleplay, the roll of the virtual dice introduces exciting twists and turns to the narrative.
Each throw of the dice influences the unfolding story, adding an element of chance that keeps the gameplay fresh, dynamic, and full of surprises.
From the whimsy of the extra elements to the vibrant colors and the subtle movement of the twinkling stars in the background, there was an intention to create an app that in itself felt a little magical.
And not just so it looked good! When a digital environment is a good experience (and a little fun), you'll increase how often the app is used, for how long, and if it becomes relied on as a part of their process.
Here's a simple guide that highlights the components.
I studied and applied Disney design principles, imitating their standards for web design, brand components, layouts, and elements to create a fun and cohesive digital experience for top-tier customers.
When an app has a lot to say, it's easy to stack too many elements, add too much language, and unintentionally create a broken user experience (or worse, frustrate the user).
Keeping it simple and organizing the information well from the start goes a long way!
These are unique features that are not automatically downloaded as part of the app and need to be selected and opted into to use. A major benefit of unique features that require opting in is the ability to include selective disclaimers. These can range from collecting and storing personal data to other specific details related to the use of a single feature. This gives user's control and liability protection for the company.
An initial feature, The Fitness Tracker, would give users the ability to track steps, offer warm-up suggestions, give water break notifications, and help with fitness goal tracking.
Offers the potential to connect with their current app or the company's own partners.
Friendly-finding tool in the app, for 18+ only (for safety and liability reasons). It would have a pop-up warning for every use of this feature with legal disclaimers and tips for using the feature safely.
The specific permissions opted in to use this app could include disclaimers for interacting with people in-person, in-app location services, and legal notices.
Would include a simple personalized profile that focused more on parks, favorite characters, ride intensity, snacks, etc. This allows people to get to know someone by interests and not through sharing personal information. This also simplifies the matching process as they can select the criteria along similar interests.
The feature can include a unique map with pre-designated meeting spots. This can speed up the meeting experience and offer a basic record-keeping system to safety and security.
Similar to the Pass Pals feature, have pre-designated meeting spots for trading pins and Lorcana cards.
This gives Disney more control of where collectors go to trade or play, keeping them as clear of normal park traffic as possible.
Also encourages Annual Passholders, who may visit Disney properties frequently, to engage in an ongoing activity that can help fill time with unique or exclusive experiences. This will also help Disney in selling pins and trading card packs.
Can offer exclusive card packs for purchase in the Annual Passholder lounges.
After time, with proven popularity, possibly create a collectors lounge only available to Annual Passholders and DVC members. The exclusivity could boost the card and pin popularity, as well as the passes.
